Are you tired of spending time and money on your lawn with no results?  You've done the basics of organic gardening by watering, mowing, fertilizing (with organic fertilizer, not chemical lawn fertilizers, I hope) and still it doesn't seem to be enough?  For a greener, thicker, healthier lawn, you need to aerate!  Lawn aeration, overseeding, topdressing and Liquid Organics treatments are four of the best things you can do for your lawn.

Grass plants in our lawns get old.  We mow them too short to allow them to set seed and rejuvenate as they do in natural meadows.  We also play hard on our lawns, and may have used chemicals that reduce the populations of earthworms and other organisms that prevent compaction and the recycling of nutrients.

Compaction is one of the main causes of poor lawn appearance, whether it's caused by heavy wear or overuse of chemicals.  Core aeration removes plugs of soil and thatch to improve water infiltration, drainage, and oxygen content of soils.  Dry, hard soil can be irrigated deeply to allow better penetration, but the best times to aerate are in the spring and early fall when soils are naturally moist and grass is growing quickly.  The deeper the penetration of the aerator the better.

Most quality aerating machines weigh close to 500 pounds.  Due to our concentrated efforts in biofertiltiy, we no longer offer this service. However, 99.9% of our customers find it well worth the extra cost of hiring someone to aerate for them (over renting the machine and doing it themselves).  The majority of aerating machines are rated at 9 cores per square foot, therefore it is recommended that two passes of the lawn are completed.  Additional passes may be necessary in areas of sparse growth.

Results

Immediately after aeration, your lawn will be dotted with small plugs pulled from the soil.  We encourage you to allow these plugs to remain on your lawn, breaking apart naturally and disappearing back into the lawn.  This process usually takes a week or two.  The plugs may be unsightly to some, however, these plugs contain beneficial microorganisms that help to breakdown thatch.

After lawn aeration, your lawn should be able to go longer between watering, without showing signs of wilt.  With repeat aerations over time, your lawn will show enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance.  Don't expect miracles from a single aeration, particularly on lawns growing on extremely poor soils.  Most lawns benefit from annual aeration.  Lawns that receive this care will be healthier, more vigorous, easier to maintain and have fewer pest problems than lawns that are neglected, as well as the reduction of thatch

Overseeding

Overseeding, is highly recommended following lawn aeration to fill in the weak spots in your lawn and help crowd out weed seeds that disperse throughout the summer. In addition, the organic gardening basics of  organic fertilizing and Liquid Organics treatments helps to get the seed germinated and increases the microbial action in the soil. Which then gets the soil food web working.
