Biological Insect Control - featuring BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis) for the control of  Tent Caterpillars

We are licensed to apply BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis) in Washington.  View your trees for caterpillars building their tents, then give us a call to schedule an appointment.

The USDA is currently working with the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) to finalize nationally-recognized standards and a national list of "allowed synthetics and prohibited natural substances" that can and cannot be used in growing and processing certified organic products. Currently, most organic standards categorize substances and practices as: permitted, regulated and prohibited. Permitted substances and practices generally qualify as acceptable management strategies because they have no negative impact on the land and they help regenerate the environment. BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis) falls in the USDA/NOSB Permitted Substances category.

The Bacillus Thuringiensis product used by the Lawn Jockey is approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI). OMRI specializes in the review of substances for use in organic production, processing, and handling. Their services are directed to all aspects of the organic industry with primary focus on the decision makers who deal with the compliance status of generic materials and brand name products.

BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis) is a bacterium that paralyzes the digestive tract of insects including tent caterpillars and gypsy moths. Therefore it must be consumed by the caterpillars and will take a couple of days to make them sick and die.  It does NOT kill them on contact.  BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis) will not harm beneficial insects, animals or humans.
